Kiwis have been shuddering through some record-breakingly low temperatures this winter. However, no one is shivering at Texas Chicken New Zealand with the brand throwing down a ‘spicy chicken’ challenge for its customers.

Best known for its freshly made, hand battered fried chicken and honey butter buns, Texas Chicken has launched what it claims is the spiciest fried chicken in New Zealand. Christened Fiery Crunch Chicken, whole chicken pieces have been coated in a mixture of chipotle and habanero peppers and fried until tender and crispy.

The chicken has been tested in-house with no volunteers able to make it past three pieces of the super-spicy new offering. That is no surprise considering chipotle peppers check in at 2,500 – 8,000 SHU on the Scoville scale and habaneros pack an even bigger punch at 100,000 – 350,000 SHU.

Texas Chicken New Zealand Country Manager, Allan Simons says:

“This chicken will knock your socks off – literally. We worked hard to ensure we created the hottest recipe we possibly could. We’ve noticed that Kiwis are becoming much more adventurous with the flavours that they will experiment with and spicy marinades and sauces are definitely becoming more popular now.

“Texas Chicken serves spicy options all year round but the Fiery Crunch Chicken takes heat to a whole new level,” he adds. “We hope our customers will take up our challenge – it’s an experience they won’t forget.”

Spice-lovers can take on the Fiery Crunch Chicken at any Texas Chicken location. The first 100 customers that successfully finish three pieces will receive full bragging rights and be in the draw to win Texas Chicken vouchers. Texas Chicken’s Fiery Crunch Chicken will be available for a limited time from 16July. It will cost $12.90 for an individual combo  (3 pc chicken, 1  regular mashed potato, 1 regular fries, 1 regular drink) and $22.00 for the family combo (6 pc chicken, 1 large mashed potato, 2 honey butter buns, 1 large fries).
